My original "chocolate bar engraving" technique is so much fun to make EDIBLE Thanksgiving name plates! Imagine how much your Thanksgiving guests will love sitting down to find their own personalized chocolate place card.
Chocolate Bar Place Cards
You will need
- 1 large (4.4oz) milk chocolate Hershey's candy bar
- Powdered (confectioners') sugar
- Orange gel food coloring/icing color
- Festive sprinkles
- Chocolate chips, melted
- Marshmallows, for standing name plate (optional)
Break you chocolate bar along the 3 vertical lines, creating 4 smaller bars (with 4 squares each). I got mine from the candy aisle of the grocery store. They have them in white and dark chocolate too!
For the inscription color you can use plain powdered sugar for a white engraving (like in my Edible Chalkboards), or tint the powdered sugar, like I did, for a festive touch with some gel food coloring/icing color. Try red, orange, yellow, or any Autumn color, to compliment the brown chocolate.
To tint powdered sugar, simply add a tiny bit of food coloring to a small bowl of powdered sugar and mix together, adding more coloring, until you have reached your desired shade. I used my fingers to coat the powdered sugar in the coloring (you might want to wear a glove so the food coloring doesn't stain your fingers). Once you have reached your desired color, sift the powdered sugar to remove any clumps, so it is back to its normal powdery consistency.
Applying medium pressure, use a toothpick to engrave a message/name/drawing. Brush away any excess chocolate shavings.
Sprinkle your engraved chocolate bars with your tinted (or plain) powdered sugar. Using your finger, gently spread the powdered sugar around, so it falls into the lines you have engraved with your toothpick. Brush away any excess powdered sugar.
Using a damp paper towel, wipe the surface of your chocolate bar to remove all excess powdered sugar, leaving your inscription to stand out. Make sure your paper towel is not too wet, so it only removes the powdered sugar on top of the chocolate and does not erase the powdered sugar that has filled the crevasse of your inscription.
Get creative and have fun! Try different fonts, messages, or even engrave a cute drawing.
Melt chocolate chips according to package, and use it as a "glue" to attach festive sprinkles around the border of your name plates.
You can use the name plates as they are, without a stand, and lay them on each dinner plate around your Thanksgiving table, or package them in clear plastic bags tied with ribbon for gift giving.
If you want your name plates to stand up, you will need half of a marshmallow (cut width wise) for the back of each name plate.
Using your melted chocolate, attach the cut side of the marshmallow to the bottom-center of your name plate.
