5 Minute Soft Serve Ice Cream... In A Bag!

Just when I thought I had created the most simple No-cook, No-egg, No-machine Homemade Ice cream I found the "ice cream in a bag" phenomenon. I got the idea browsing the internet, finding tons of variations, so I decided to do a few test batches to come up with a creamy soft serve with simple ingredients. This easy soft serve is made out of cream, sugar and vanilla and the best part is, it is ready to eat in minutes! The chocolate version was my favorite, but try mixing in your favorite candy bar or cookie pieces for a gourmet twist. This simple soft serve ice cream is a perfect, kid friendly summer activity. Children will love shaking the bags, watching the liquid turn into ice cream. Simple, fun, and delicious!

5 Minute Chocolate or Vanilla Soft Serve Ice Cream

Yield: about 2 scoops

You will need
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 1/4 cup white, granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (for chocolate ice cream)
  • pinch of table salt
  • 4+ cups ice
  • 1 cup rock salt
  • 1 quart-size ziplock bag
  • 1 gallon-size ziplock bag
  • towel to protect hands fro cold

Directions

Combine half and half, sugar, vanilla, (cocoa powder if making chocolate) and salt in a pint-size ziplock bag. Squeeze out excess air and seal bag tightly to close.

Layer ice and salt in a gallon-size bag. Place the sealed bag of liquid in the middle of the ice bag. Seal the ice bag tightly to close. Shake the bags, using a towel to protect your hands from the cold. Keep shaking and kneading the bags until the liquid mixture begins to harden and turn into ice cream. This will take about 5-10 minutes.

Once liquid has turned into ice cream, remove from ice. At this point you can open the bag and stir in mix-ins of your choice.

Snip off tip of bag and pipe into cone, bowl, or eat right out of the bag!
